HOW TO “GO GREEN” IN 2019 + SAVE MONEY DOING IT

This year, I’m trying to make a more conscious effort to be less wasteful. I’ve recently traded in the plastic shopping bags you get at the grocery store for reusable totes, in fact, I’m cutting back on my use of plastic altogether if I can help it. I realize that sometimes this isn’t always feasible, but I thought I’d share a few swaps you can make for an eco-friendly lifestyle that will save you money in the long run. So without further adieu, here are my tips on easy low waste + zero waste changes you can make if you’re looking to “Go Green” in 2019.

eco-friendly swaps

RECYCLE

Unfortunately, my county doesn’t provide recycling as the norm for our area. So in efforts to be less wasteful in this way, I’ve started using more products that will easily break down instead of sitting in a landfill for years. This will include using more plant-based products like cloth napkins and coconut scrubber sponges

THE GREEN SHOP

REUSE

Instead of using plastic cups from take-out restaurants, I try to bring my own cups. I also, try to order product re-fills so that I can add them to glass containers. Even though lots of product re-fills come in plastic, one container is better than 5. I do this for our handsoaps and cleaning products and contain them in glass spray bottles and dispensers. One of my favorite places to shop for products like this can be found at Grove Collaborative. They offer a wide variety of discounted eco-friendly products delivered straight to your door.  You can also get a free gift set with your first order by signing up here.  Some of my personal favorite brands they carry are Mrs. Meyer’s and Caldrea.

REPURPOSE

When I look at my wardrobe and I feel like I need an update, I will either donate my older clothing or sell it. There are tons of different platforms that allow you to resell your clothing which is kind of a bonus to cleaning out your closet because your getting paid to get rid of things.  Some of my favorite places to sell and shop for items will include Poshmark (USE CODE: cottagebound for a free $5 credit) and eBay.

Have you heard of the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”? It’s all for the love of thrifting! After I’ve donated items, I like to pop in the store to scope out the goods that others have donated. You just never know what you might find a first edition book, a cool rattan chair, or some amazing old records. It’s like being on a treasure hunt EVERYTIME! I also like to find things that I could possibly craft into something else hence the re-purpose bit. I’ve listed some thrifted Etsy finds to get you in the mindset below.

THE VINTAGE SHOP

I hope this sets your mind at ease knowing that going green can not only save you money in the long run, but it can also be just as much fun as it is rewarding! With that being said, I think it’s high time we change what the color green has been known for (envy) and replace it with something a little more positive like effort!

Cheers- Ashley Nicole

  • Every little space makes a difference in my opinion. Speaking of making a difference, @auratenewyork is doing something amazing! They are crafting fine jewelry out of raw materials that are sustainable and ethically sourced. Not only that, they also donate a book to a child in need giving you a clear conscious with every purchase.
Shopping is fun, but when you know your dollar goes the extra mile to help someone in need, the experience is so rewarding!

  • Mercury is finally out of retrograde! Did any of you have any crazy technical difficulties last month? I know I did! Just a reminder that even though it is over, we will still feel a little bit of that static cling from the retrograde which can still have an effect on our day to day for another two weeks. They call this the “retro-shade”, but on the bright side last night we had a 2nd new moon or a “black moon” when there are two new moons in 1 month. 🌚

New moons usually mean it’s time for new beginnings and reflection, but a black moon is especially powerful towards these things. This new moon is rising in Leo a sign known for creativity and will help you to learn how to express yourself in creative ways throughout different houses like your work sector, relationship/love sector and so on. 💫

This new moon will be all about self-expression so listen up and open up! Allow yourself to try new things!
This new moon will also allow us to see truths that we may have been denying or it hasn’t unveiled itself to us as of yet. This new truth may cause you to want to pick up and start fresh somewhere, with someone or something new, hence “new beginnings.” Another factor under the reign of this new moon is our need to have and create more self-love. 💛 When we are happy and content with ourselves, we are confident, but we also must remember to respect ourselves and our boundaries and expect others to do the same. If not, it’s time to move on to people that value and respect you the way you do.
Stand your ground and know your worth and don’t let precious time be plucked by those who disagree to give you what you know you deserve.
This also goes for the opposite side of this equation, so if you are not giving others what you expect for yourself, you may see this action as a response to something you may need to work and reflect on yourself in this new beginning.
I always say the door swings both ways so don’t expect it if you are not willing to do the same if not more for them. My tip here is as simple as this: The more you give, the more the universe gives back to you and so on as it is always better to give than receive for the rewards are much greater! Cheers
  • When your wardrobe is ready for fall and it’s only July... 😆🍁🥵 I’m so pleased to have partnered with @wayfair to share this cozy corner as another sneak peek of our guest room/office makeover! ✨
Because this space is also used as my office/craft room, where I like to keep all the crafty goodies tucked away in the closet, I wanted to offer a place for visitors to hang their items so they felt like a guest and not like they are “crashing in the office.” That’s where this free standing closet organizer comes in. Annnd the bonus part is that when it’s not in use by guests, I get to use it to steam clothes or organize what to pack on trips.

That’s WINNING x TWO and to celebrate I want you to WIN x TWO too by sharing this helpful tip: Did you know that if you turn your sweaters inside out when hanging them you don’t get those weird shoulder humps when you go to put them on the right way? Yep! You can thank my Mom for that one! 😉 ✨Sharing all the shopping links for this on the @LIKEtoKNOW.it app! • Flashback to an amazing spring day spent brunching and record shopping with a good friend. The weather was perfect, not too hot yet and the mimosas were tall! Things are finally starting to get back to normal around here after some much needed time away gathering and remembering a dear friend whose no longer with us. This event was also an important reminder that life is precious and I should be more thankful for even my mundane days and all the little things that make it complete even though they aren’t super exciting or glamorous, but you know what? When I have a husband happy to greet me in the mornings and two puppies that think the world of me. Suddenly, my life doesn’t feel so boring, it feels like love and that’s how I know everything will be ok and I was meant to be here. ❤️

  • Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’ve been so disconnected... I’ve been healing and I apologize that I’ve not been as lively over here, but I’ve been dealing with my own dilemmas. I’ve had two accounts of death from cancer just recently. One I kind of set myself up for because I knew there was no cure and another that was totally unexpected... it’s been a rough ride, but I’m still here and I’m happy and thankful that I can be there for others during these hard times. If you are dealing with anything like this feel free to reach out to me. I would love to help support you and always sending love and light your way! .
